Course Reflection Blog: Communication Technology and Society

Over the course of this semester, I have learned that communication technology affects almost every part of modern life, from the way people interact socially to how businesses, governments, and media organizations operate. Through class discussions, blogs, and the Kickstart Project, I gained a better understanding of how communication technologies continue to evolve and how they impact society both positively and negatively.

One of the most significant trends I learned about was the rapid growth of digital and streaming technologies. Traditional media such as cable television and radio are slowly being replaced by streaming platforms and online services. Technologies like digital broadcasting, and wireless communication systems have changed how people consume entertainment and information. For example, many people now use platforms like Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify instead of traditional television or radio. This trend showed me how technology constantly changes consumer behavior and forces media companies to adapt in order to stay competitive.

Another important area that I have learned about was the use of theoretical approaches to study communication technologies. One theory that stood out to me was technological determinism, which explains how technology can shape society and influence human behavior. I realized that smartphones and social media platforms have completely changed the way people communicate and interact with each other. People now rely heavily on instant messaging, social networking, and digital content for communication and information. This theory helped me better understand why technology and social media has such a strong influence on daily life and social interactions.

This course also taught me how political policies and economic factors influence communication technologies. Government regulations, such as FCC ownership rules and media policies, play a major role in controlling how communication systems operate. I learned that policies can impact competition, accessibility, and the spread of information. For example, debates about internet privacy, data collection, and net neutrality show how governments and large technology companies influence what users can access online. Economic factors are also important because companies compete to develop faster, cheaper, and more advanced communication technologies in order to increase profits and attract consumers.

One of the most important social issues that we have discussed in this course was privacy and data collection. Modern communication technologies collect large amounts of user data through apps, websites, and social media platforms. While these technologies make communication easier and more convenient, they also raise concerns about surveillance, misinformation, and the misuse of personal information. Learning about data brokers, targeted advertising, and artificial intelligence made me realize how much personal information is shared online every day. This topic was especially important because it showed how communication technologies can both benefit society and create ethical concerns.

In the end, this course helped me better understand the relationship between communication technology, society, politics, and culture. Through my blogs, discussions, and projects, I have developed a stronger awareness of how technology shapes modern life and how important it is to critically evaluate both the advantages and disadvantages of these systems. I believe the knowledge I gained from this course will help me become a more informed technology user and better understand the future of communication in society.
